How To Make A Dress Shorter?

Should you learn how to make a dress shorter? Yes. The length of a dress is often a personal preference, and you may want to consider whether making your dresses shorter will be comfortable and flattering for you. If you are short in stature, you may find that wearing a dress that is too long makes you appear even shorter. Conversely, if you are taller than average, you may find that a dress that is too short looks awkward on your frame. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide what length works best for your body type and individual taste.

That said, there are some general guidelines to follow when considering the length of your dress. Most dresses fall somewhere between the knee and ankle, with a few exceptions at either end of the spectrum. If you are interested in making your dresses shorter, you may want to consider a style that ends above the knee. This length is both flirty and flattering, and it can be especially appealing for summer weddings or other events. So we’d show you how to make your dress shorter as well as the reasons to do so.

Why You Should Make Your Dress Shorter

1. It Shows Off Your Legs

If you’re like most women, you probably think your legs are one of your best features. So why not show them off? A shorter dress will do just that, and it will also make you look taller and leaner.

2. It’s More Flattering

A shorter dress is more flattering than a long one because it shows off your curves and emphasizes your waist. It’s also less likely to get caught in the wind or blown up in the rain.

3. It’s Cooler in the Summer

A short dress is much cooler in the summer than a long one. It can be downright uncomfortable to wear a long dress in the summertime.

4. It’s More Versatile

A shorter dress can be worn for more occasions than a long one. You can wear it to work, to church, out on a date, or to a party.

5. It Makes You Feel Sexy and Confident

A shorter dress makes you feel sexy and confident, and that’s something that every woman should feel like she has access to. When you feel good about yourself, it shows in your demeanor and in the way you carry yourself. So go ahead and rock that short dress!

Measure The Length Of The Dress And Sew

Then, you need to cut the fabric according to the measurements you have taken. For the dress bodice, start by cutting out a rectangle that is the same length as your dress measurement and twice the width of your desired finished chest size. (If you want a 50″ finished chest size on your dress, then cut out a 100″ long by 20″ wide piece of fabric for the bodice.)

For the skirt, start by cutting out a rectangle that is the same length as your dress measurement and 4-6 times the width of your desired finished waist size. (If you want a 26″ finished waist size on your dress, then cut out a 104″ long by 26″ wide piece of fabric for the skirt.)

After you have cut out your fabric pieces, it is time to start sewing! For the bodice, begin by sewing the two short ends of the rectangle together to form a tube. (If you are using a serger, you can skip this step and just sew the raw edges together.) Then, fold the tube in half so that the wrong sides are facing each other and sew down the middle. (If you are using a serger, you can also skip this step.)

Next, sew the top of the bodice shut. (You can use either a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch for this step.) Finally, hem the bottom of the bodice.

Importance Of Ironing The New Hem Of A Dress When Sewing

One of the most important steps when sewing a new hem on a dress is to make sure that the new hem is pressed well. This is especially important if the dress is made of a thin or delicate fabric, as wrinkles in the fabric can be very noticeable.

To ensure a smooth, wrinkle-free hem, take the time to press it with an iron. Use a moderate heat setting and a pressing cloth (such as a cotton handkerchief) to protect the fabric from scorching. Be sure to press evenly along the entire length of the hem.

If you’re in a hurry, you can use a steam iron instead of a regular iron. Just be careful not to let the steam touch the fabric directly, as this can cause the fabric to become wet and wrinkled.

Once the hem is pressed, it should look neat and professional. This will help your dress look its best when worn.
