What to Wear on a First Date? A Classy Girl’s Guide

The idea of a first date can be nerve-racking as it is, let alone trying to figure out what to wear. Your mind is all over the place, thinking of the “what ifs”, worrying about first impressions, awkward silences, and whatnot. Though you can’t anticipate the outcome, or how the date will unfold, you have some control over how you display yourself and the way you want to be seen. And that starts with picking the right outfit.

I would say that “dress to impress” plays some part in your guide to choosing the proper date attire, but you should mainly be focused on how you feel in that outfit. You want to express yourself via your clothes and you want to convey a certain energy, but you also need to exude confidence and flair.

So single ladies, lend me your attention for a couple of minutes while I take you on the ultimate guide for picking the right outfit on your first date.

Pick something that’s true to your identity

My first piece of advice would be to pick something that speaks for you, it doesn’t have to be out there. In fact, you don’t want your date to remember you for your extra outfit (unless that’s your usual style), so pick something that represents you the best, that’s comfortable enough to walk in, eat in, and be able to breathe in. If there’s a pair of jeans that you always get complimented on, a color that highlights your skin tone or a dress that shows off your beautiful shape then opt for that. Going on a date does not mean you have to buy a new outfit, examine your wardrobe, pick the items you love the most and start mixing and matching.

So you’ve picked your favorite item, but you still have no idea how to style it into a date-worthy outfit. Here are a few ideas to guide and inspire your fashion choices.

  • Spring/Summer outfit ideas

Consider a day-to-night outfit, if you don’t have much time to go back home and change. If it’s something casual like grabbing a cup of coffee or getting lunch then a pair of jeans with a fancy blouse or a shirt dress with a chunky belt and a pair of statement shoes should do the job. Channel your inner Kardashian and put on a cinched blazer dress with sock boots, a pair of massive hoop earrings and a tight ponytail. If you wanna exude confidence and show everyone you’re down for business (or love) you can even go for a colorful power suit, a pair of nude pumps.

Spring and summer are also the perfect occasion to rock your favorite sundress. Pair it with ballerina flats, strappy high-heel sandals or a pair of ankle boots, a denim or light suede jacket and give yourself some beach waves. For your makeup look, indulge in a bit of highlighter to give your skin that dewy look and finish off with some warm tones. The goal is to give off a natural, sunkissed look.

If you’re going somewhere fancy, then it’s time to get that ‘special occasions only’ dress of yours out of the closet. A bodycon dress that hugs you in all the right places would be perfect for the occasion. Pair it with a short cape, your elegant pair of high heels and you’re set for your date. A chiffon playsuit, a simple black mini dress, or a midi dress with fun prints are also pretty strong contenders for your date night outfit.

  • Fall/Winter outfit ideas

Sometimes, when it’s too cold to function, you don’t even think of clothes as more than the purpose they serve, to keep you warm, that is. But just because it’s icy outside, doesn’t mean you don’t have to try and look good. Here are some outfit ideas for when it’s chilly outside, but that still say ‘I made an effort’ and not just I threw this on last minute.

Put on a pair of tweed trousers, a nude or pastel turtleneck, and a nice oversized fuzzy jacket. Pair it with some chunky sneakers, boots or a pair of oxford shoes. You can even layer up by throwing on a plaid scarf to tie your look together.

If you wanna experience your “confessions of a shopaholic” moment, pick a knit-sweater dress, a pair of thigh-high boots and a stylish trench coat. Don’t forget your signature scarf and if you wanna be a little extra, throw in a pair of leather gloves. You will look dazzling and your outfit is guaranteed to turn some head and make a lasting impression on your date.

Unleash your inner Parisian fashionista with a corduroy dress over a turtleneck, a long coat, a beret and a pair of winter boots.

What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language.

If you’re more on the edgy side, a leather jacket is your best pick. Throw it on with a midi skirt, a graphic tee if it’s a bit warm outside, or a knit sweater and a pair of combat boots, or couple it with your favorite pair of jeans, and a pair of ankle boots to complete the look.

You can have fun with prints and colors, opt for a monochromatic look or mix and match. Don’t be afraid to experiment, after all, is it really fashion if you’re not taking risks?
