Benefits to health of owning a cat

It can’t be right that there are benefits to our health of owning a cat. Bet, you’re saying that. Yet, after getting interested in this topic, I decided to dig deeper.

Some of you may don’t like these sassy and stubborn creatures, but you don’t know that they play a big role in staying and becoming healthy.

They’re not only cute and cuddly (if they want to), they’re also important in our health and in our home.

We don’t really need to rely on these high-technology, gadgets and inventions to reserve our health, but what we only need are these four-legged creatures, which we think, they hardly work at all unlike dogs.

Yeah, we sometimes say, cats are lazy, sleep whole day and don’t even chase rats at home, but we shouldn’t underestimate the power of having a cat at home.

I, myself, am a cat-lover ever since I was a kid, that I even chase cats that I got these long scratches on my arm from a cat when I was 3 until I became a teenager.

Yet, that has not stopped me from having cats.

Although different cats have accompanied me throughout my life and growth, I never paid attention to the health benefits they offer to humans until lately.

That’s why I made a list below how we get health benefits from owning a cat, from restoring our health to improving our well-being.

Here are the benefits of owning a cat at home:

Reduce risk of heart diseases

There is a study that spending time with your cats reduces stress and lowers blood pressure by 30 percent and you might have missed it, but stress is one of the risk factors of having cardiovascular diseases.

Cat owners are less likely to die of heart diseases than those who never had a cat.

  • Boost well-being

Whoever got stressed just spending time with your cats? Having quality time with them for about 15-30 minutes boost serotonin level in your blood and lowers cortisol level.

Serotonin is one of the ‘‘happy hormones’’ that is responsible in boosting our mood and well-being, making us more sociable and feel happier.

Whereas the counterpart of this hormone is cortisol, which is responsible for creating stress and depression.

To avoid having more cortisol in our blood, you could apply your cats as your stress-management.

Beat insomnia

Cats can sleep 12-16 hours a day and that thought alone could maybe lure us to sleep like our felines. Studies revealed that cats help us sleep better and beat insomnia.

According to Dr. Steve Weinberg, founder of 911 VETS, it can feel nice and comfy to have a cat sleep on a bed with you, it potentially calms anxiety and night terrors.

Make bones stronger

There are known remedies which make our bone density stronger such as doing exercises, but there are also remedies which are not that familiar to us, like a cat’s purr.

Cat’s purr ranges from 25-150 Hz and within this range is said to help improve bone density and promote healing which reduces the risk of having osteoporosis.

Additionally, researchers suggest that 30-50 Hz seems to resonate already with bone to stimulate bone growth.

Fight allergies

This would come off as a surprise to you. Cats fight allergies? Isn’t it on a contrary, perhaps?

Yet, according to Marshall Plaut, M.D., of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, to have been exposed to pets early in life protects us from pet allergy and other common allergies such as dust mites, ragweed and grass

Just watching cat videos alone bring a smile on your face, right? Especially if you are a cat-lover, you could relate to this fact. Who would have thought that cats could have benefits to our health when we have always thought of the contrary?

How about you? Do you have cats and how do they help you when they are around? I would love to know more about your experiences with the cats and how do they improve your well-being. Do you agree or not that they help us in some way?
