Rhinoplasty: How It Works and Recovery Method

People usually perform rhinoplasty surgery to change their nose shape or for medical reasons like repairing cartilage problems that separate nostrils from one another. Some want to change their nose shape or make it smaller on other occasions.

Let’s find out how rhinoplasty works and its recovery method.

How Does Rhinoplasty Work?

There are no ordered steps to a rhinoplasty surgery since each is unique and made for the specific goal and anatomy of the person getting the surgery. For instance, when you visit rhinoplasty by Dr. Wise, the professional will first assess your past and current history, medications, expectations, and the type of anesthesia best for you.

When rhinoplasty is performed, it might be done between your nostrils (through a small cut made at your nose base) or inside your nostril. Sometimes, the surgeon would alter the cartilage and bone under your skin.

Sometimes the doctor would change your cartilage or nasal bone shape in various ways. This usually depends on the materials available and your nose structure. And also how much is needed to be added or removed. When deciding to make little changes, the surgeon can use cartilage gotten from deep inside the nose.

Cartilage from the rib or other body parts might be used when making large changes. After making the change, your surgeon will place the nose’s tissue and skin back, then stitch the cut made to your nose. On occasions where the wall between both sides of your nose is crooked or bent, your surgeon might also decide on a correction to improve breathing.

After performing the surgery, you will be placed in a recovery room to be monitored by the staff till you wake. It is normal to lessen the same day of the operation, or you might be asked to stay behind if there are other health issues.

Recovery Method From Rhinoplasty

After your rhinoplasty, a plastic or metal splint may be put on your nose by the surgeon. This helps in holding your nose’s new shape while it heals. Also, nasal splints may be placed inside the nose to hold your septum. While recovering in the monitoring room, the staff will check you for some hours after the procedure.

If there are no problems, you will be asked to leave the same day. Since you might still be under anesthesia, you need a friend or family to take you home. On other occasions, you might need to stay overnight.

To bring down bleeding and swelling, you have to ensure your head is elevated above your chest while resting. Sometimes you can experience congestion if your surgeon places cotton in your nose. Usually, surgeons advise that splints and dressings are kept in place for a week.

Sometimes, your incisions might be closed with absorbable stitches that would not need to be removed since they will dissolve. However, if there are no absorbable stitches, you will need to visit your doctor in about a week to get them removed.

Final Words

Rhinoplasty involves an easy procedure and is pretty safe. However, healing usually takes some time. Your nose might remain swollen and numb for several months. Though you may recover in weeks, some of its effects would stay for months. It usually takes a year to get the result of rhinoplasty surgery.
